Tumelong Mission and Development Programme
By Donald Chiloane
The Tumelong Mission is at the forefront of Social Development in our Church in the Diocese of Pretoria. It is a flagship of our Christian outreach and is the envy of most Dioceses in the Province. It has done so much impressive work, that Hope Africa, the Provincial Social Responsibility Department, has invited our Director, Paulina Tlaka, to help them with the establishment of Social Development in other Dioceses.
The main activities of the Mission are HIV/AIDS prevention, treatment and care; Early Childhood Development; Poverty and hunger alleviation and elimination; Care and support for the elderly and persons with disabilities; Youth Empowerment and Gender Sensitisation.
All Parishes are humbly called upon to participate in the programmes of Tumelong Mission by contributing resources and also by reporting cases where Social Development interventions are urgently required. The Parish Executive Committee members of Social Development are also members of Friends of Tumelong and are expected to attend all Friends of Tumelong quarterly meetings which are held at the Bishop Kraft Centre, next to St Saviour’s Church, Pretoria West.
Bishop Allan is appealing to all Parishes to support Tumelong Mission bottle-top project so that every Parish acquires a wheel chair of its own to assist during an emergency.
DIOCESAN SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY
By Paulina Tlaka, Director
Tumelong Mission is a non-profit, Public Benefit Organisation focusing on mission and community development. It was established in 1939 as a mission and development department of the Diocese of Pretoria to focus on the actual needs of the people and to provide material support to those in need.
It was started in Lady Selbourne which was demolished by apartheid authorities because it was said to be too close to white communities. It focuses on the needs of people in the communities of Garankuwa, Hammanskraal, Winterveldt, Soshanguve and Mabopane serving all people regardless of religion, race or creed. The communities of Mamelodi and Atteridgeville also benefit but to a lesser extent.
The area of service covered by Tumelong Mission is limited to the geographic area of the Diocese of Pretoria reaching 109 communities. The areas start from Centurion, The Reeds in the south, stretching to the north just below Belabela (Warmbad). From the far east, it covers areas from Zithobeni, Cullinan, Ekangala stretching towards the margins of Swartruggens in the west. These are broad, wide and vast communities within the boundaries of the municipalities of Tshwane in Gauteng Province; Moretele, Madibeng, Rustenburg, Moses Kotane and Kgetleng including Royal Bafokeng Nation all in the North West Province; and parts of Thembisile Hani and Dr J S Moroka in the Nkangala District of Mpumalanga.
Tumelong Mission’s core business is to develop people so that they can have sustainable livelihoods. This includes the eradication of poverty, and prevention of circumstances that will hinder that. Our secondary business is to provide care and relief so that development can take place in a stable social environment.
We provide our services through the following key focus areas: HIV and Aids, Capacity Building, Early Childhood Development and Care and Relief.
